Another Math Game-Flower Power (Freebie!)

I wouldn't say that my kiddos are getting bored with the math games we have out, but I have found them to be rather loud lately when they play their math games.  In my room, I teach a lesson, they practice with a worksheet or game.  Then they go to their "math drawer" (my variation of math tubs) and when they finish that work, they play math games with partners.  My math games include many of the things I have posted on here, plus some that I created YEARS ago, that aren't as cute. :)  (such as memory games where they match a number sentence to the answer.)

I created this game yesterday that we will be playing today.  It is a variation of "War" or "Compare" or "Top It"  (Those are all the names that I have seen the various math programs use.)  There are number cards (40-99) and cards with either the word "Tens" or "Ones" on.  Directions are on the file, but the kids will divide the number cards evenly between themselves (I will have only 2 kids play together because we have other things to choose from, and I find that more than 2 creates an even louder environment.)  They will keep their number cards in a pile, face down.  The "tens" and "ones" cards will be face down in a separate pile.  I have written on the directions that you might want to copy those cards on a different color, though I didn't.  My kids will just separate the cards first.  Students will turn over a number card, then a "tens" or "ones" card.  They will look at the number in that place and whoever has the higher digit gets to keep the cards.  Game is over when all of the cards are gone.  The person with the most cards is the winner.

You could also have the kids play and the least number in the place can be the winner!

Don't forget to check out this post for another freebie (2D and 3D shape booklet) and a little note about the new math stations I'm making----and a chance to get a copy for free by leaving a comment---but please leave your comment on that post so that I can randomly choose from that post!!!  I also have the same contest on my Facebook Page!  There's a link to it on the side bar :)

Have a great day!

    1. Thanks! I like to try to make games that don't require much instruction---by just varying a game they are familiar with to practice new skills :)

I think I'll add to it when I get a chance to add some hundreds into the mix for enrichment for first grade, but it would be great for 2nd grade too!

  8. Doing math games with kids is a good idea to learn math at the same time having fun playing. It is important for young students not to feel bored and dull in solving math so that may find interest in learning math lessons.
